Caltrans is warning drivers to expect major delays as it begins a series of extended weekend lane reductions along the 405 freeway through the Sepulveda Pass.

Starting Friday, Aug. 22 at 10 p.m. through Monday, Aug. 25 at 5 a.m., the freeway will be reduced to at least three lanes in each direction to accommodate construction. Closures will impact on- and off-ramps, and drivers are strongly urged to take alternate routes or use public transportation.

Here’s what drivers should know:

Northbound I-405

  • Reduced to three lanes from Santa Monica Boulevard to just north of Sunset Boulevard
  • Ramp closures:
    • Santa Monica Boulevard on-ramp
    • Wilshire Boulevard off-ramp
    • Both eastbound and westbound Wilshire Boulevard on-ramps
    • Sunset Boulevard on/off-ramps
    • Sepulveda Boulevard/Moraga Drive off-ramp

Southbound I-405

  • Reduced to three lanes from just north of Sunset Boulevard to eastbound Wilshire Boulevard
  • Ramp closures:
    • Sunset Boulevard/Church Lane on/off-ramps
    • Westbound Wilshire Boulevard on-ramp

Suggested Detours:

  • To access northbound I-405 from Santa Monica Boulevard: Travel east on Santa Monica Boulevard, then north on Sepulveda Boulevard to the Moraga Drive on-ramp.
  • To access southbound I-405 from Sunset Boulevard: Travel north on Church Lane, then south on Sepulveda Boulevard, and west on Santa Monica Boulevard to the southbound on-ramp.

These weekend closures will recur approximately every two weeks for about 25 weekends. Caltrans notes that schedules may shift due to weather or operational needs.

Residents and businesses near the construction zone may experience noise, vibrations, and dust during the work period.

The closures are part of the $143.7 million I-405 Pavement Rehabilitation Project, which aims to enhance safety, improve traffic flow, and extend pavement life between Van Nuys and Westwood.

Drivers are encouraged to check real-time traffic updates on the Caltrans QuickMap and visit the project webpage for more details.
