The 2027 Met Gala theme is already inspiring an unexpected suggestion for the guest list: Adam Sandler. Known for his oversized shirts, basketball shorts, and a laid-back approach to fashion, the actor is hardly a typical choice for the biggest night in fashion. However, with next year’s exhibition celebrating everyday clothing, some fans think his signature style makes him a fitting candidate for an invitation.

The Met Gala 2027 Theme Will Celebrate Everyday Fashion

Next year’s Met Gala has found its new theme after John Galliano withdrew from the event in August. The original plan was to honor the British fashion designer, but following backlash over his 2011 criminal conviction for his antisemitic outburst in Paris, Galliano voluntarily stepped down.

On November 5, the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that the 2027 Costume Institute exhibition and the Met Gala will celebrate the theme “extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday,” as reported by Vogue.

The exhibition will explore the subject through two perspectives. One will look at how everyday wardrobe staples, such as shirts and jeans, can be elevated into high fashion, while the other will examine how unconventional materials, including paper, aluminum, and plastic, can be reimagined as wearable works of art.

How The Met Gala Theme Took Shape

Andrew Bolton, who has been with the Costume Institute since 2002 and has served as Curator in Charge for 10 years, admitted to the fashion publication that he didn’t have an alternative theme after the Galliano exhibit fell through.

He then thought that it was best to come up with a new idea instead of just substituting one designer for another. Moreover, he wanted a theme with “contemporary resonance.”

“It was really important to come up with an exhibition that wasn’t just a masterwork show or something that we could do a little bit more easily. I wanted it to be as challenging and as provocative and as beautiful as a John [Galliano] show would have been,” Bolton noted.

His brainstorming led him to think about how “people experience clothing in everyday life” in terms of “habit and touch and movement and sensation.”

Following the announcement, social media quickly suggested one celebrity they believe deserves a place on the exclusive guest list, with many arguing the star would be a perfect fit for the theme.

“If Adam Sandler isn’t on the guest list for the 2027 Met Gala, what’s even the point?” one user commented. Another commenter wrote, “I would just show up dressed like Adam Sandler.”

Meanwhile, some posted edited photos showing a casually dressed Sandler on the Met Steps, where attendees typically show off their outfits for the prestigious fashion event.

Another person joked that the fashion world has “finally caught up with Adam Sandler’s vibe.”

The Actor’s Style Gave Birth To ‘Sandlercore’

Adam Sandler is known for his relaxed approach to fashion, rarely trading his casual clothes for a traditional red-carpet suit. His signature style revolves around oversized shirts, hoodies, baggy shorts, and sneakers, prioritizing comfort over formality.

In early December 2021, a Google search report showed 10 names of celebrities with the top trending style for that year, and the actor’s name nabbed the No. 1 spot. He beat other stars, including Harry Styles, Britney Spears, Doja Cat, Cher, and Lizzo, among others.

Before the results came out, TikTok users began posting videos and photos of Sandler with the hashtag “Sandlercore,” creating a fashion trend inspired by Sandler’s laid-back looks. Over the years, some people on social media have also been wishing for a Sandler-themed Met Gala.

Following the Google search report in 2021, Vogue named Sandler its Fashion Icon. In the feature article, writer Liana Satenstein wrote that she was not entirely surprised by the outcome, especially due to the actor’s “pandemic style.”

“The past 18 months have been dominated by all-things cushy: sweatpants and sweatshirts. Sandler has long encapsulated this look,” she wrote.

Sandler has repeatedly explained his dislike for wearing formal clothes, saying that they restrict him, make him itchy, and ruin his mood. Throughout the years, he has mostly stuck with his personal style even on red carpet events, except for a few rare occasions.

As for being recognized as a trendsetter, Sandler said it was “accidental.” “Here I am wearing goofy clothes, and I don’t know. I don’t think about it, but I appreciate you saying that,” he said.
