A one-year-old has died from injuries sustained in a car accident involving the child’s mother on Wednesday night, Long Beach officials said.

The Long Beach Police Department said it happened around 6 p.m. on Wednesday in the 5500 block of Ackerfield Avenue.

Officers responded to calls of a traffic collision and arrived to find Long Beach Fire Department crews already providing medical aid to the victim.

“The child was transported to a local hospital, where, despite lifesaving efforts by paramedics and medical staff, succumbed to their injuries,” LBPD said in a statement.

According to the department’s preliminary investigation, the accident happened while the toddler’s mother was moving her vehicle in a carport area of an apartment complex.

While the mother was moving her car, her one-year-old child walked in front of the vehicle. The mother did not see her baby, resulting in the child being struck while the vehicle was in motion, officials said.

“At this time, neither impaired driving nor distracted driving appear to be factors in the collision,” stated LBPD.

Officials did not name or reveal any other identifying factors regarding the toddler.

Anyone who may have witnessed this incident is asked to call Detective Ashley Van Holland of the Long Beach Police Department’s Collision Investigation unit at 562-570-7355.
