Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department pursued a driver who was believed to be in possession of a gun.
The chase began around 9:30 p.m. Sparks flew from the vehicle’s bare rims, its front tires shredded and glowing red against the asphalt. From overhead, the driver was seen holding something in one hand, possibly a phone or a bottle of water.
The black Toyota Camry suddenly came to a stop as officers drew their guns from a distance. However, the driver did not appear to comply with commands to surrender and throw the keys out of the car.
The driver then began moving again, fleeing through the Highland Park area, repeatedly stopping and taking off as police continued the pursuit. Authorities said the suspect was also wanted in connection with an alleged assault on a police officer.
The standoff occurred at Piedmont Avenue and Sumter Drive in Highland Park, where the vehicle was registered to a home in the area. Officials reported they were able to speak with family members and confirmed the identification of the driver.
Sky5 was overhead during the pursuit.
