Jennifer Lopez is turning a painful change in her family life into new music, but the upbeat sound she’s promising hides an emotional backstory.
Watching her 18-year-old twins, Max and Emme, leave for college sent her back into the studio to write about love and loss.
Now, as she prepares to release “Proof of Love,” Lopez is explaining why a joyful dance track can also carry the heartbreak of saying goodbye.
Jennifer Lopez Says Her Twins Leaving Home Was ‘Devastating’

In an October 28 interview with Variety, Lopez described the upheaval of sending Max and Emme, whom she shares with ex-husband Marc Anthony, off to college.
For nearly two decades, raising her children had occupied much of her attention. Suddenly, the routines that structured her days were changing, leaving her to wonder how she would fill the unfamiliar space.
She called the transition “devastating and sad and scary,” even as she celebrated her children’s growing independence.
Lopez explained, “They take up such a big part of your brain for so long, and when they’re gone, which is devastating and sad and scary, you’re facing a life that’s totally different now, and you’re like, ‘What am I going to do with this space and this time?’”
Rather than retreat from that uncertainty, the 57-year-old said she returned to the studio. The result was a burst of songwriting she considers among her strongest work.
Her next musical chapter, she explained, is ultimately joyful, although the material still carries “a tad of a tear.”
Her New Dance Song Has A Painful Meaning Beneath Its Beat

The first taste of that material will be “Proof of Love,” a song Lopez describes as upbeat despite its unusually reflective subject.
She told Variety that the track explores how sadness and grief can reveal the depth of someone’s attachment.
Missing a loved one, in her view, is not only a source of suffering but also evidence that the relationship mattered.
She wanted to transform that realization into something listeners could dance to rather than treating the feeling solely as a tragedy.
Lopez Previously Admitted She Had Been Crying Over The College Move
Her latest revelation follows months of candid comments about approaching life as an empty nester.
During a May appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” reported by Us Weekly, Lopez said she had already spent two months crying as the twins prepared to graduate. Writing messages for their school yearbooks proved especially emotional.
She explained that Max and Emme attended different high schools and planned to enroll at different colleges, although she wanted both to pursue their own dreams.
By September, the impending move had become part of her daily reflections. In a video shared by her JLO Beauty brand, she talked about imagining herself looking through baby pictures and relying on exercise and skincare rituals to maintain a sense of stability.
She also encouraged parents facing the same transition to revisit ambitions they had put aside while raising children.
Earlier in the year, Lopez revealed that both teenagers had been accepted to all five colleges to which they applied and had received scholarship offers.
She praised their persistence and the effort they invested in school.
As The Blast covered in June, she was particularly moved by their determination and growth, making their next chapter both rewarding and difficult for her to process.
She also made the most of the summer before college, spending time traveling with the twins.

Her Latest Music Follows Another Deeply Personal Album

Lopez has often treated her private life as material for her songs, although the inspiration has shifted.
Her 2024 album “This Is Me… Now” explored romantic love and was closely connected to her reconciliation and marriage with Ben Affleck. It arrived alongside a musical film and a behind-the-scenes documentary.
As the Recording Academy explained, Lopez considered that earlier album an expression of renewed faith in lasting romance.
The couple subsequently divorced, and Lopez later described the period as extraordinarily difficult.
Her latest comments, however, point to motherhood and personal change as the direct inspiration behind this next body of work.
Jennifer Lopez Is Pairing The New Song With A Familiar Album And Vegas Film

“Proof of Love” will arrive as a bonus track on the first vinyl editions of her 2011 album “Love?” in November. Preorders for three versions opened October 28.
The original record featured “On the Floor” with Pitbull, “I’m Into You” with Lil Wayne and “Papi.” Lopez also teased more playful songs to follow, although she did not announce a release date for a full new album.
According to Paramount+, “The JLo Show: Live in Las Vegas,” filmed during her residency finale, premieres November 26 on CBS, with an extended version streaming on Paramount+.
Together, the releases suggest that Lopez is filling the space left by her children’s departure with music.
The emotion behind it may be painful, but she appears determined to make this new era sound like hope.
