Bob Dylan’s unexpected meeting with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican has attracted attention for more than the significance of the encounter.
The reunion comes as Dylan’s name resurfaces in another conversation involving fellow music legend Paul McCartney, who recently admitted that he is still too nervous to call the singer despite wanting to collaborate with him.
Meanwhile, Pope Leo’s recent health disclosure has also drawn attention, following reports that doctors discovered a localized nodule in his lung and recommended its removal.
Bob Dylan Meets Pope Leo XIV In Unexpected Reunion
Dylan was received by Pope Leo XIV at the Apostolic Palace on Wednesday, November 4, while the musician was in Italy for his “Rough and Rowdy Ways” tour.
The 85-year-old singer-songwriter arrived at the Apostolic Palace wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, with the hood pulled over his head. Images released by the Vatican showed him standing alongside the pope, creating a striking contrast between the pontiff’s traditional white cassock and Dylan’s all-black appearance.
The meeting was brief, with the two men exchanging greetings and a few lighthearted remarks. The pope presented Dylan with a rosary, while the singer gave him a copy of his autobiography, “Chronicles: Volume One,” according to Vatican News.
The encounter was particularly interesting because Pope Leo had previously referenced Dylan’s work in the preface to a book about disarmament titled “Disarmed and Disarming: Peace Is a Gift.” Published in July 2026, the book featured lyrics from Dylan’s 1963 anti-nuclear protest song, “Go Away You Bomb.”
The song was never officially recorded or released on an album, making the pope’s reference an unusual nod to a lesser-known part of the musician’s catalog.
Fans Compare Bob Dylan To ‘Emperor Palpatine’ And Joke About His Appearance
Although the meeting had an interesting historical and musical connection, social media users appeared particularly fascinated by Dylan’s appearance in the photographs.“Why is he channeling ‘Emperor Palpatine’?” a user asked.
Some users also found the combination of his clothing and the formal setting amusing, with the images prompting jokes about what the musician looked like he was bringing to the pope.
One user voiced an elaborate observation, writing, “I find something rather characteristically Dylan about the whole affair: even when granted an audience with the Pope, he manages to look as though he has just arrived to deliver a mysterious parcel.”
The jokes did not stop there. Another social media user described the encounter with the comment, “The Pope meets Judas.”
Some, however, found the ensemble disrespectful towards His Holiness. “Hey Dylan, you do not show up like that to visit your Pope. Head must not be covered by hats or hoods. Such disrespect,” one fan slammed.

Paul McCartney Gets Candid About How He Feels Calling Bob Dylan

Dylan’s Vatican appearance also comes as another music legend recently opened up about his admiration for the singer.
Legend Paul McCartney talked about a possible collaboration with Dylan, despite their history of meeting over the years. The former Beatles member was asked which musician he would still like to work with.
“I get asked [who I want to collaborate with], and I always think Bob Dylan. But I’m too nervous to ring him up,” McCartney admitted, per The Blast.
He even joked about how he might introduce himself if he ever made the call, imagining saying, “Bob? It’s Paul.”
Pope Leo XIV Had Surgery After Doctors Discovered A Lung Growth

Away from the unusual meeting with Dylan, Pope Leo XIV has also been navigating a health concern that drew attention in October.
As The Blast reported, the 71-year-old pontiff revealed that doctors had discovered a localized nodule in his lung during medical examinations.
He shared the news while addressing pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square on October 11, explaining that doctors had detected the growth early and recommended its removal.
“Recently, during some medical examinations, doctors found a localized nodule in my lung,” he said.
The pope reportedly accepted the medical recommendation, with the procedure expected to require approximately a week of recovery. The growth was later confirmed to be cancerous.
Pope Leo XIV Continues To Warn World Leaders About Artificial Intelligence

Pope Leo has also stirred growing public engagement with conversations about technology, particularly the rapid development of artificial intelligence.
Earlier in September, the pontiff had urged world leaders to take concerns about AI seriously, pushing back against the idea that warnings about the technology’s potential risks should be dismissed.
Speaking to journalists, Leo emphasized that ignoring expert concerns would not be a responsible approach to technological progress.
“We can’t just sit back and pretend nothing is going to happen,” he said. He also clarified that he was not panicking about AI but believed the warnings raised by specialists deserved attention.
