Photos of Sophia Loren With Her Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing During a 1956 Cinema Rally Event in Italy
In April 1956, the 21-year-old rising star Sophia Loren participated in the “Rally del Cinema” (Cinema Rally), a highly publicized celebrity car race across Italy that blended post-war cinematic glamour with mid-century sports car culture.
During the Rome to San Remo leg on April 9, 1956, massive crowds of ardent fans swarmed her vehicle. The crush of the crowd grew so intense that it actually cracked her car’s windshield, leaving the actress visibly overwhelmed inside the cockpit.
Later in the rally, near Acqui Terme in Piedmont, Loren briefly went off the road. While it was only a minor incident with no injuries, iconic photos emerged of her pushing her own Mercedes-Benz, cementing the event in pop culture history. The rally perfectly captured the vibrant, theatrical spirit of 1950s Italian motor and cinema culture.
