The Trump administration held a press conference on Monday to publicly link the use of Tylenol during pregnancy to autism — a declaration many medical experts say isn’t supported by scientific evidence and studies. In a long and frequently rambling event, President Donald Trump railed against the medication, at times broadly telling Americans not to use it while floating a number of unfounded claims, including the advice that parents avoid giving newborns some vaccinations. Trump was joined by several other officials, including Health and Human Services secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has long sought to draw links between vaccines and autism and is now using his governmental power to do so. In April, he called autism “preventable” and vowed to “identify the exposures that are causing this epidemic.” Kenvue, the company that owns Tylenol, has stated there is no link between acetaminophen and autism, and the FDA’s new guidance on the matter stops well short of what Trump himself said. Below is our account of what happened during this bizarre press conference.
