The Young and the Restless puts Matt Clark (Roger Howarth) in rough shape and may need Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford) now more than ever. Matt’s big plan to stop Patty Williams (Stacy Haiduk) fell apart and we might soon see him switching gears.
But if Matt is turning back to Phyllis, the question is, will she accept him? Today we’re going to talk about Matt’s big plans in ruins and him needing Phyllis because things are not going the way that he hoped. Several people warned Matt, but he just did not listen.
Young and the Restless: Matt Finally Leaves Town
So, after several delays that annoyed Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) and Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow), we saw that Matt finally left town with Patty because Matt is trying to do the right thing. Even if he can not get official redemption from those that he wronged, he felt by taking Patty away that Matt was still doing something helpful.
Not only did he want to get Patty out of town, but Matt naively thought he could get Patty to turn herself in. And really Matt wanted to stay because he has these genuine feelings for Phyllis. But it really hurt Matt that nobody would believe that he’s changed. He does feel genuine remorse.
Matt’s Redemption Is a Hard Sell on Y&R
But after decades doing monstrous things, you know, it’s hard for Matt to convince anybody that he was not that guy anymore. Mostly though, he wanted forgiveness from Sharon Newman (Sharon Case) and Nick. And he did not want anybody else to hate him. But Matt’s primary focus was Sharon and Nick because he had hurt them the most of anybody. So, Matt was hoping that if he proved himself to Nick and Sharon that they might find it in themselves to forgive Matt and then he could move on.
But of course that did not happen, especially not with Nick. And even Sharon would feel better with Matt out of town. And Sharon made that clear to him. So, Matt was basically trying to appease everybody by leaving Genoa City and getting Patty out of town at the same time because she was a threat to so many people. Plus, right before Matt was finally ready to leave, Victor Newman had Matt dragged back to the new ranch by his goons.
Young and Restless: Nick Rages at Matt
And Victor said it was up to Nick whether Matt could leave town or not. And of course, Nick raged at Matt and told him, “Get out of town.” Nick said he never wanted to see him again. He also warned Matt that he’d better not go to LA or anywhere near Noah Newman (Lucas Adams) and Sienna Bacall (Tamara Braun). And they said if Matt ever came back to Genoa City, then Victor and Nick vowed it would end very very badly for Matt. But at the same time, Phyllis is falling in love with Matt and she really did not want him to leave. Phyllis even begged him to stay.
She wanted Matt to forget all the haters and just build a new life with her. And at the time, Matt was very back and forth. He did not know what he wanted to do because, of course, he did not want to leave Phyllis. She’s the one person who believes in Matt and she even loves him, but he did not want to be a town pariah. So, in the end, Matt took off because of Patty, but also because of Nick, Sharon, and Victor.
And this week we’ve got Patty back on the loose and Matt is all banged up because Patty crashed the car Matt was driving when he tried to convince Patty that she needed to turn herself into the police. And last week we saw her telling Matt that she would never be locked up again.
Matt’s Plan Goes Sideways on Y&R
That’s when Patty grabbed the wheel and she yanked it really hard and caused them to crash. So, this week Matt comes to in the wreckage. He finds himself alone in the car. His face is all bloody and battered. So, it looks like the crash and the airbag did a number on Matt. And of course, Patty is nowhere to be found. So, it looks like she and Matt did not get that far away because later this week, we’ve got Matt in a motel room. It looks like one of the ratty places in Genoa City. And he’s lying on the bed. He’s looking miserable.
Some fans are wondering if Patty crashing the car and injuring him could turn Matt back into the same old psycho that he was before. I really doubt that’s going to be the way they go. And after trying to do the right thing with Patty and failing almost immediately, I tend to think Matt’s in a pitiful place. Things are dismal. He did not want to leave Phyllis, but made the sacrifice to try and earn a little bit of redemption. But Patty ruined everything for him.

Young and the Restless: Matt Goes Running Back to Phyllis
So, I fully expect Matt to head back to Genoa City for a couple of reasons. Partly because I’m sure he wants to see if that’s where Patty went to. And Matt may want to stop Patty from hurting anybody and causing any more chaos. However, I think primarily Matt may also go crawling back to Phyllis and tell her, “I’m sorry. I was wrong.” So I can see Phyllis getting a call from Matt and he tells her, “I’m sorry for leaving. I should have stayed with you and I love you. I want to be with you, Phyllis.” All that kind of stuff.
This week though, Phyllis is making vows with Sharon. It sounds like about moving forward with their lives. She may encourage Phyllis to put Matt behind her and she tells Sharon, “Okay.” But if Matt comes crawling back all banged up and sad, I do not think Phyllis can turn Matt away.
She may at first, but I do not think in the end that she can. But right now, Phyllis is hurt that Matt left her. And plus, Phyllis warned Matt repeatedly that Patty was going to hurt him. I mean, heck, Nick and Victor warned him that Patty is dangerous. So, this week, if Phyllis makes a pack with Sharon to put Matt behind them, things could get complicated.
Young and Restless: Matt Not Going Anywhere
Of course, Phyllis has a romantic interest in Matt and Sharon has all that past Matt trauma, but I think Phyllis and Sharon may both be in for one heck of a surprise because I do not think we’ve seen the last of Matt in Genoa City. And sure, he could slink away from this wreck once he licks his wounds, but I doubt he’s going to go.
I do think he’s going to want another chance with Phyllis, and I suspect she and Matt are going to start a real relationship, but I think Phyllis will make Matt work for it first. And I’m still pretty sure he’s going to be part of putting an end to Patty’s reign of terror once and for all on Young and the Restless.
That could be how Matt actually is redeemed because I do not think he’s going anywhere. And honestly, Phyllis could really use Matt in her corner because he’s pretty much the one person who is really there for her.
Phyllis Needs All the Support She Can Get on Y&R
Daniel Romalotti (Michael Graziadei) wants to trust Phyllis, but he’s having a hard time because her son thinks Phyllis is up to something again, and she definitely is. Lauren Fenmore (Tracey Bregman) supports her. Michael Baldwin (Christian Leblanc) supports her, but that comes with a caveat of, you know, Phyllis, we wish you would behave better.
Right now, she’s taking out some big loans to buy up that real estate from Cane Ashby (Billy Flynn). And Phyllis is trying to make her mark on the business world in Genoa City, but Daniel just refused to work with Phyllis at Arabesque. It’s clear she does not want to do this alone. She wants somebody at her side.
And I think Victor is going to keep going after Phyllis and she’s really going to need somebody supporting her. And Matt may have learned his lesson and realize that Phyllis is the only person in the world that he can count on. Granted, his background is as a criminal, but that is a business. Maybe it’ll somehow translate into helping her run Arabesque. We’ll see. I think Matt’s gonna come crawling back, though.
