Finally, fashion is getting another woman designer. This morning, Marni announced Meryll Rogge as the brand’s new creative director after Francesco Risso left his post there last month.
Rogge, a Belgian designer who launched her namesake brand in 2019 and previously worked alongside Marc Jacobs and led womenswear at Dries Van Noten, is known for her out-of-the-box interpretations of otherwise traditional silhouettes, such as tweed suit sets in exaggerated proportions and completely sheer slip dresses meant to be worn over clothing rather than under.
“I’m truly honored to join Marni — a house I’ve long admired for its independent spirit. To take on a role defined by such visionary creative directors is both humbling and inspiring,” Rogge said in a press release. “I look forward to helping shape what comes next for Marni.”
Rogge will be the second woman to run Marni; the first was founder Consuelo Castiglioni, who launched the brand as a supplement to her husband’s fur line. While men mostly make up the top brass at the industry’s biggest fashion houses, several women have been appointed to creative-director roles: Veronica Leoni at Calvin Klein, Louise Trotter at Bottega, and even Sarah Burton at Givenchy. We’d love to see that trend continue.
