Hey, how would you describe how you felt when you heard Ted Lasso being renewed for a fourth season, after what seemed like the final season? Thrilling? Unexpected? Would you compare it to the resurrection of a beloved family pet? Probably not, but that’s the cast of Ted Lasso feels about the surprise fourth season renewal. Not one, but two stars have made the pet resurrection comparison this year, the most recent star being Hannah Waddingham. “It feels like it was the most beautiful, beloved dog that was buried, and now we’ve exhumed it, and I am here for it,” Waddingham shared with Variety at the Smurfs premiere on July 13. “I was hankering and hankering and hankering and hankering to see where Rebecca had gone, where she was going to. She’s my girl. She’s in my bloodstream, so I’m thrilled that it’s been exhumed.”
Despite teasing that “everyone dies” at the end of season three to prepare fans for a true finale (spoiler alert: that didn’t happen), Brett Goldstein also made the same animal comparison a few months earlier to NPR. He explained, “I have a friend that I went to university with, and I think about this a lot. He had a cat that died. He loved his cat, and the cat was run over, and they buried the cat, buried it. And he was a child. They buried the cat in the garden, and he lay in bed so sad, so upset and crying, and he prayed and he prayed and he wished. ‘I wish the cat would come back.’ And then the cat did come back, and it turned out the cat they buried wasn’t their cat. And I think about that all the time… Like ‘We buried it… We all cried, we had a funeral. Are you saying we can bring anything back?’ It’s too much power.” Jason Sudeikis, it’s your turn to make a traumatic comparison. Can it please be an imaginary animal?
