Actress Daisy Ridley is best known for her role as Rey across all three movies in the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy: 2015’s “The Force Awakens,” 2017’s “The Last Jedi,” and 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker.” The star of “The Young Woman and the Sea” will play a lead role in a reimagining of the sci-fi classic “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.” The project is a TV series from Legendary Television and will be released on Paramount+.

In addition to starring in the project, Ridley will executive produce the series alongside the show’s writer, Akiva Goldsman of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” fame. Matt Shakman, known for “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” is also attached to executive produce and direct.

Sources close to production told Deadline the writers’ room is already underway, though no release date has been announced.

Ridley herself took to her Instagram Stories to announce her excitement for the project, simply writing, “Yippee!” over a screenshot announcing the news.

‘Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea’ Was Previously A Film and TV Show

The new series is being produced in association with the Irwin Allen Estate, which was behind the 1961 feature film and the ABC TV series of the same name. According to reports, the new series will be based on its predecessors.

The new “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea” series follows an ocean scientist, Lee Crane (Ridley), who joins a secret government program after her twin sister dies in a tragic Arctic expedition.

At the center of the operation is the USS Seaview: a retro-futuristic submarine found frozen in the ice. Marked with impossible historical symbols, the vessel only powers up when Lee steps aboard. Thrust into command of a high-tension crew and an uneasy alliance with government officials, Lee leads the Seaview on dangerous undersea missions to contain supernatural forces, all while searching for the truth behind an erased human history and the mythical city of Atlantis.

Jon Jashni will also serve as executive producer. Derek Thielges will serve as co-producer.

Daisy Ridley will next appear in a retelling of “A Christmas Carol” called “Ebenezer.” “Pirates of the Caribbean” star Johnny Depp is playing the titular role. “Harry Potter” star Rupert Grint, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” actor Sam Claflin, “The Lord of the Rings” star Ian McKellen, and “Severance” actor Tramell Tillman will all appear alongside Ridley.

Directed by Ti West, the film gives the classic Christmas tale a new twist. According to the logline:

“Miserly businessman Ebenezer Scrooge faces his past, present and future as he fights for a second chance at redemption.”

The film is billed as a dark fantasy holiday drama and will be distributed by Paramount Pictures. It is scheduled for a theatrical release on November 13, 2026, in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

Many fans had been anticipating a “Star Wars” announcement, as the actress recently disappeared from Instagram. On October 15, the “Cleaner” star deleted all but one video: an old collaborative post for her film, “Magpie,” which her husband, Tom Bateman, wrote based on her original idea.

She returned to her Instagram Stories on October 16 in order to share a promotional photo for “Ebenezer.” She threw in a secret “Star Wars” easter egg for her fans, setting the music to John Williams’ “We Wish You A Merry Christmas.” John Williams composed the scores for all nine films in the Skywalker Saga, as well as several other “Star Wars” projects.

So far, Daisy Ridley has said very little about returning to a galaxy far, far away. She surprised fans at Star Wars Celebration 2023 in London by taking the stage to announce her return as Rey in a new movie directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The film is set years after the events of 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker” and follows Rey’s journey as she builds a new Jedi Order.

However, it’s unclear whether the project has a script yet, as it has cycled through several writers in the three years since its announcement. Many fans feel that the project will likely be folded into the trilogy Simon Kinberg is writing. Although Lucasfilm has yet to confirm any details, rumors suggest that this new trilogy will take place after the sequel trilogy and feature a new cast of characters.
