Some heroes wear capes, while others don pink short-sleeve button-ups and use a sandwich as their weapon of choice. I’m speaking, of course, about the guy who hurled a sub at a federal officer in Washington, D.C., on Sunday night, immediately becoming a bit of a folk hero online. Footage of the incident went viral, and Trump administration officials are acting like this is a Luigi-level crime. As it turns out, this sandwich hero actually knows a thing or two about crime: Until very recently, he worked for the Department of Justice.

According to police, Sean Charles Dunn approached a group of Metro Transit Police officers and ICE agents on Sunday and began yelling obscenities and calling them “fascists.” As the video shows, Dunn eventually threw his foot-long sub (presumably from the Subway they were standing in front of) directly into the chest of an officer before running off.

Despite running pretty fast, Dunn was arrested and charged with “assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers and employees of the United States.” According to court documents, Dunn told one of his arresting officers, “I did it. I threw a sandwich.” Jeanine Pirro, D.C.’s U.S. Attorney, said in a video that Dunn would be charged with a felony.

On Thursday, Attorney General Pam Bondi shared in a post on X that Dunn was a DOJ employee. “I just learned that this defendant worked at the Department of Justice — NO LONGER. Not only is he FIRED, he has been charged with a felony,” she wrote. “This is an example of the Deep State we have been up against for seven months as we work to refocus DOJ.” These people need to figure out their messaging. This is the Deep State? No, this is a guy using an Italian BMT as a projectile.

The Washington Post reported that Dunn worked as an international affairs specialist in the criminal division of the DOJ. To me, this means he’s probably an expert in who would qualify as a fascist and would be discerning in his use of the word. It seems like he knows what he’s talking about.
