As an Intelligence Unit O.G. and One Chicago icon, you better believe Chihards were pumped as Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) returned to television screens during Chicago P.D.‘s latest.

Viewers have been missing Ruzek dearly throughout Season 13 of Chicago P.D. as he deals with some family matters with his father, Bob (Jack Coleman). Bob and Ruzek have grown closer over the years, but as Bob’s Alzheimer’s continues to worsen, Ruzek has been showing up for his dad to help out as much as possible. The family matters have meant Ruzek hasn’t been throwing himself onto the frontlines of investigations as much as usual, but fortunately his wife Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati), has been keeping his P.D. friends in the loop.

Fortunately for those of us rooting for Ruzek, the P.D. fan favorite returned to the fold to help out on an investigation in Season 13’s “Meant to Be.” Here’s what happened.

Chihards got a long-awaited update about Ruzek’s father at the top of P.D.‘s latest, which began with Burgess and Ruzek waking up in bed together. Burgess rolled over and was delightfully surprised to see Ruzek after not catching him getting home the night before.

“How’d things go with Bob?” Burgess asked.

“He’s stable, but he didn’t know where he was at all last night, so it was pretty brutal, actually,” Ruzek said, sadly adding, “I think it’s going to be months, not years.”

“You’re a good son,” Burgess told Ruzek tenderly, giving much comfort.

“Well, he’s a good dad,” Ruzek smiled.

Burgess asked if Ruzek wanted to go into work that day; Voight would be more than happy to give him more time off if he needed it. Ruzek shrugged this idea away, telling Burgess that he wanted to go into work and missed his Intelligence Unit crew.

Ruzek returned to the squad room to help the unit on an action-packed sting operation, with Burgess making strides in running an undercover mission within a group of drug dealers. Meanwhile, Ruzek and Burgess connected over their daughter’s future as they continued to contemplate transferring schools. The couple only want the best for Mikayla, but they’ve found themselves bickering over whether it’s the right move to relocate their adoptive daughter due to differences between her peers at school.

During P.D.‘s “Meant to Be,” Ruzek and Burgess were surprised to see that Makayla had begun some of the essays to apply to these alternate schools, making them emotional as they continued to grapple with what was the best course of action for their daughter at the end of the day.
