The Boys‘ has officially taken its final bow on Prime Video, wrapping up one of the most satirically charged superhero stories in television history. The five-season run brought chaos, carnage, and surprisingly genuine emotional beats, but for a large portion of the fanbase, one familiar face was conspicuously missing from the ending.

Queen Maeve, the fiercely complex supe played by Dominique McElligott across the show’s first three seasons, did not appear in the series finale. Her absence was particularly noticeable given the appearances of her likeness in Amazon’s “previously on” clips leading up to the final episode, which had many fans expecting at least a cameo before the curtain fell. Her arc had always carried a quiet emotional weight, and the hope of seeing her come full circle in the finale was something the show itself seemed to tease.

As it turns out, showrunner Eric Kripke genuinely wanted her back. In an interview with Gold Derby, Kripke revealed that he reached out to McElligott about returning for the final season, but she declined due to her retirement from acting and a scheduling conflict. The news that the Irish actress has largely stepped away from the industry came as a surprise to many viewers who assumed her absence was simply a creative choice.

Kripke described their exchange as warm and respectful, noting that McElligott told him she had kind of retired from acting and was no longer really pursuing roles, and that the filming dates did not work for her anyway. He emphasized there were no hard feelings, calling it a very pleasant and non-controversial moment between the two of them. The two have reportedly stayed in loose contact, with Kripke sharing that they exchange emails every six to eight months or so, and that McElligott even reached out to check on him following the Palisades fires.

Despite her physical absence, the production made sure the character was not forgotten. Kripke told TV Insider that the creative team chose to show Maeve passing the torch to Starlight, and Starlight passing it to Marie, establishing a lineage of strong women that began with Maeve, and that the goal was to bring up her spirit even if she could not be there in person. It is a thoughtful workaround, even if it understandably left some fans wanting more.

McElligott’s Queen Maeve was last seen in the ‘The Boys’ Season 3 finale, where she pushed Soldier Boy from Vought Tower and absorbed his depowering blast to protect others, departing the story powerless but alive and beginning a quiet life with her partner Elena. It was a genuinely moving sendoff at the time, and the character’s survival always left the door open for a return that, as it now turns out, was never going to come.

The franchise is not entirely finished, with a prequel series titled ‘Vought Rising’ currently in development, but for fans of Queen Maeve specifically, the finale marks the true end of her chapter. Whether her absence stings as a missed opportunity or reads as a fitting conclusion to a character who had already found peace is a question worth debating, so share your thoughts on how the show handled Maeve’s legacy in the comments.
