Kevin Atwater Just Got Major Life-Changing News on Chicago P.D. (RECAP)

As a One Chicago OG, fans of Chicago P.D. have been rooting for Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) for more than a decade, and his life just took an exciting turn in Season 13’s “On the Way.”

Chicago P.D.‘s January 28 episode followed Kevin Atwater through a thrilling investigation peppered with street-racing criminals, designer sports cars, a string of homicides, and a white-knuckled undercover mission led by the valiant Atwater. It all began after her contemplated buying a fancy new car — a clear indication that he’s been going through an existential crisis of sorts, especially after crossing paths with the magnetic Tasha Fox (Karen Obilom) earlier this season.

Historically a family man, Atwater has set up all of his loved ones for success, leaving the P.D. fan favorite to wonder: What does he want his future to look like?

“We’ve got really fun Atwater throughline this year with some fun guest stars for him to meet,” P.D. showrunner Gwen Sigan told NBC Insider. “I think he’s in a time of his life where he’s sort of discovering maybe there is ‘more that I wanted than what I have,’ you know?”

What happened between Tasha Fox and Kevin Atwater on Chicago P.D.?

For those who may have missed Atwater’s previous brush-in with Tasha, the pair first crossed paths in Season 13’s “Miami” after Atwater recognized Tasha from their time in the Academy together. The pair’s chemistry was instantly electric as they teamed up on an investigation together, but their quick connection was complicated by one thing: Tasha was moving to Miami within weeks.

Her relocation inspired her to ask Atwater about what he envisioned for his future, as he’d always viewed the Windy City as his home. Despite Tasha’s move, the attraction between her and Atwater became undeniable, and the pair slept together at the end of the episode. Atwater woke up to find Tasha gone with an orange on his nightstand alongside an invitation to visit the Sunshine State whenever he wished.

Despite choosing to stick around in Chicago, that hasn’t stopped Tasha from evading Atwater’s thoughts. Chicago P.D.‘s January 28 episode “On the Way” saw Atwater months after his reunion with Tasha, still thinking about the tenacious and charming officer fondly.

It didn’t take long for Atwater’s longtime friend Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) to notice him glued to his phone as he typed and retyped message after message to Tasha with no success. Burgess encouraged Atwater to face his fears and reach out to Tasha.

After narrowly making a successful arrest, Atwater gained the courage to finally reach out to Tasha, leading to an unexpected visit from his former flame.

Tasha visited with big news for Atwater

P.D. viewers applauded as Tasha arrived on Atwater’s doorstep with a suitcase, flaunting her Miami badge while teasing Atwater about searching for a “very sexy” man with “soulful brown eyes” whom she’d last seen in that apartment. Atwater gleefully invited Tasha inside, taking her bags as she got settled. But the lack of communication between them since their hook-up remained an uncomfortable soft spot as they argued over it being two or three months since they last spoke.

However long it had been, Atwater admitted he was happy Tasha was there again. He needed some time to think about some of the questions she’d asked him, and had done some thinking about what he wanted his future to look like. Atwater then confessed that he wanted to see Tasha more and get to know her better.

He then swooped in for a sweet kiss, but soon caught on that Tasha was bothered by something. After breaking apart, Atwater asked if Tasha was no longer single, joking about her now being with one of the Miami Dolphins. But Tasha remained serious.

“I’m pregnant,” Tasha confessed. “And I should have told you before, but I just wanted to see what I wanted before I told you. And I thought a lot about it, and I want this baby. Whether you’re in our lives or not, I want this baby, and that’s not gonna change. But then you reached out, so I thought maybe…”

Atwater was rendered speechless by Tasha’s shocking update. “Kevin, you OK?” she asked nervously.

Atwater remained stunned by her words, but as a grin slowly spread across his face, it was clear to both of them that the P.D. mainstay was downright thrilled about becoming a father. How will this impact Atwater’s future in the Intelligence Unit?
