Melissa Roxburgh Unpacks Bex’s Guilt Over Lying to Shane in The Hunting Party Episode 4

Melissa Roxburgh Unpacks Bex’s Guilt Over Lying to Shane in The Hunting Party Episode 4

Warning! This story contains spoilers for The Hunting Party Season 2, Episode 4, “Amanda Weiss.”

Twisted grief is the theme this week on NBC’s thriller series The Hunting Party, as Agent Rebecca “Bex” Henderson (Melissa Roxburgh) crosses paths with another female serial killer on the loose in “Amanda Weiss.”

Dubbed “The Masseuse,” Weiss (played by guest star Elizabeth Gillies) made a reputation for breaking the neck of her female massage clients. Still grieving the loss of her beloved sister, Bex theorizes that Weiss’ behavior is trauma related and she’s trying to recapture the missing bond with her sibling. Bex, CIA agent Jacob Hassani (Patrick Sabongui) and Shane Florence (Josh McKenzie) circle up to stop her when she kidnaps another woman.

The episode also starts to pull back the layers of their shadowy new Inmate Recovery Task Force commander, Colonel Lazarus (Kari Matchett). Meanwhile, Shane reveals some big news to Bex about his past and why he was working in the Pit, but she can’t be quite as honest in return.

In this week’s NBC Insider exclusive interview, Roxburgh discusses this week’s dangerous woman, shares a little intel on where Bex’s daughter is, and hints at issues that are coming to haunt Bex and Shane.

Melissa Roxburgh on getting to “play” friends with Liz Gillies

This week’s The Hunting Party villain, Amanda Weiss, has committed grisly crimes. But Roxburgh said she had a great time welcoming the actress who played her, Dynasty alum Gillies, to their set.

“Liz Gillies, she’s awesome as a person,” Roxburgh confirmed. “She was so fun to play with. She’s super down to earth playing this girl who misses her sister and wants to resolve that storyline in her head. Playing friends with her wasn’t hard at all, because we got along so well off camera.”

Bex engages in an escalating game of cat and mouse with Weiss, and Roxburgh brought something really interesting to her character. “It’s fun seeing what the guest stars do with the killers and the choices that they make,” she said.

“Some people go way off of what they’ve done in the past, and some people use what they’ve done in the past to make it creepy, so we got to see a little bit of that [here],” she added of Gillies’ approach to the role.

Shane opened up, but Bex has to hide her own secrets

Shane and Bex stand together on The Hunting Party Season 1, Episode 10.

As they spend more time together on the road retrieving killers, Shane and Bex’s comfort with each other is increasing, and Roxburgh said he’s a great influence on Bex.

“We get to see her lighten up a little bit too, leaning on other people. Shane, specifically, starts to become the new support for her, and makes her laugh again and makes her smile again,” Roxburgh told NBC Insider. “His character is so goofy and light-hearted in a lot of ways. He has this whole other side to him too, but the fact that Shane does have this goofiness [with] her, I think she can put some things down around him.”

Shane must feel the same, because while held secrets about his personal life in Season 1, Shane feels the need to build trust with Bex through honesty in “Amanda Weiss.” In the episode, he revealed that he found out that a Pit inmate was his mother (Shane had been given up for adoption, so he’s been seeking answers about own past mysteries). But Bex can’t reveal what she knows about Colonel Lazarus, which means she’s holding back the truth from Shane.

“When the Odell thing happened, she obviously had her walls up but the fact that Hassani and Shane have said, ‘We’re all in this together,’ she kind of started to soften again. But now there’s a secret,” Roxburgh said with an big exhale. “Obviously, something is starting to happen between Shane and Bex, and so I think that there’s now this guilt that Bex is carrying. Like, he’s been there for me and my turn to be there for him, but I can’t, because if I do, I don’t know what happens. If I pull the thread, what unravels? She’s really struggling with herself with this information. We get to see a lot more conversation about that as the episodes play out, until it all comes to a head.”

The Hunting Party Is Back for Season 2!

The Hunting Party, the thrilling drama series starring Melissa Roxburgh as Agent Rebecca “Bex” Henderson, has returned for a second season on NBC. Expect deepening mysteries, surprising reveals, and of course, a new group of twisted serial killers who’ve escaped from the mysterious prison known as The Pit.

An update on Bex’s adopted daughter, Sam Henderson

Episode 4’s theme of familial connections brought up a bond in Bex’s life that hasn’t been addressed yet this season — her adopted college-aged daughter, Sam (Kyra Leroux). When last we saw her, Sam was safe at school but she hasn’t been folded into the season yet.

Roxburgh confirmed that Sam would be back in the storyline in Season 2, when it fits into the storyline. “She has a full blown daughter,” she said of Bex, and “bringing Sam into this world doesn’t make a ton of sense with the pacing of things. When we stop to have mom moments, it takes away from all the other crazy stuff.”
