Who Is Sofia on Brilliants Minds & What Is Happening with Dr. Wolf?

We just got a major clue about Dr. Oliver Wolf (Zachary Quinto) on Season 2 of Brilliant Minds as viewers question what lands the talented neurologist in Hudson Oaks.

Brilliant Minds‘ flash-forward sequences have been a certified doozy after Season 2 kicked off with Dr. Wolf attempting an escape from Hudson Oaks, which viewers learn is a long-term psychiatric facility. The reason behind Wolf’s admission to the facility has remained a mystery. Season 2 continues to sprinkle clues about his resentment for being there while showing the present-day Wolf’s path toward the psych ward, and viewers are eager to see where this baffling storyline heads next.

Here’s what we know about Sofia and the actress who plays her.

Who is Sofia on Brilliant Minds?

Played by Sarah Steele, Sofia has Brilliant Minds viewers on the edge of their seats as Wolf’s mysterious new friend. Brilliant Minds viewers first met Sofia in Season 2’s “The Boy Who Feels Everything” after Wolf visited his estranged father’s abandoned apartment and was shocked to find a stranger, Sofia, inside.

Confused by her presence, Wolf soon discovered in Season 2’s “The Rider” that Sofia was his father’s neighbor whom claimed was treating for insomnia in exchange for someone to watch his father’s plants and write a book he was producing. After catching wind of Sofia’s condition, Wolf encouraged her to stop by Bronx General for help.

Aside from playing Sofia on NBC’s Brilliant Minds, Sarah Steele has appeared in many hit series and films. After making her film debut in the 2004 comedy Spanglish, Steele went on to guest star on several hit television series. Some of her first roles include a 2006 guest appearance as Katie White on Season 16 of Law & Order (“Cost of Capital”), as well as playing Tessa Nobile in a 2008 episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent (“Legacy”). Some of her other notable television projects include Gossip Girl, Blue Bloods, Nurse Jackie, and Girls, to name a few.

Some may recognize Steele as the scene-stealing Marissa Gold in The Good Wife, a role she reprised in the spin-off series The Good Fight. Some of Steele’s other recent projects include The Accidental Wolf, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Elsbeth.

Dr. Oliver Wolf had to “save” Sofia at Hudson Oaks on Brilliant Minds

Sofia may or may not have a role to play in Wolf’s landing in Hudson Oaks, as revealed by Brilliant Minds’ January 26 episode (“The Rabbit Hole”), which saw Sofia and Wolf continue to connect and develop a friendship. The pair formed a quick bond in part thanks to Sofia’s awareness of Wolf’s father’s past and quirky absurdities; Wolf has felt isolated in his pain over his father’s recent abandonment, and Sofia seems to be helping cure that wound.

Wolf set out to help Sofia with her insomnia, and after she went to the hospital, they ended up getting distracted by Wolf’s ongoing workplace drama, which is never in short supply.

As the pair went out to enjoy some drinks and cut loose after Wolf’s stressful days, Wolf’s voiceover revealed his inner thoughts: “Sometimes a new friendship feels so intoxicating, like the connection you’ve been searching for all along, that you might not see the warning signs.”

As Wolf and Sofia danced, the scene suddenly flashed forward to Hudson Oaks, where Wolf carefully snuck through a hallway, opening doors of different rooms with no apparent success. Finally, Wolf opened a door and found a teary-eyed Sofia.

“Wolfie, what are you doing here?” she asked him.

“I’m here to save you,” Wolf explained with urgency.

“Finally, I knew you’d come,” Sofia said, giving Brilliant Minds viewers plenty to chew on as the Hudson Oaks mystery continues.

Sofia may not actually be real on Brilliant Minds

After inviting Sofia to Bronx General Hospital to complete a sleep study in Brilliant Minds‘ February 2 episode “The Invisible Man,” the experiment went haywire after a hospital-wide carbon monoxide leak. While several other patients were whisked to medical attention, Sofia left the hospital in a frustrated huff.

While touching base with his good friend Dr. Carol Pierce (Tamberla Perry) about treating Sofia “off the books,” Pierce raised concern over Sofia walking away from the gas leak unscathed. Wolf assured Pierce that Sofia was fine as she left the hospital, but Pierce remained perturbed. Wolf also made an emotional admission to Pierce through tears that he has “not been myself lately.”

Later that night at Wolf’s father’s apartment, Wolf and Sofia touched base on their unique bond, forged in their shared abandonment by his father. “If it makes you feel any better, your dad told me he was miserable without you,” Sofia told Wolf.

“Guess I don’t hate to hear that,” Wolf shrugged. “I’ll never understand why he came back just to leave again. Every time he goes, he leaves so much damage in his wake.”

Sofia snagged a baseball bat from the corner and handed it to Wolf. “Maybe it’s not too late for you to do some of your own damage,” she suggested as Wolf took it in his hands, looking back to his father’s apartment with vengeance in his eyes.

Meanwhile, at the hospital, a confused Dr. Pierce looked back on video surveillance footage from Sofia’s room during the sleep study. But instead of seeing Wolf’s initial check-in with Sofia and her eventually breakout later on, Pierce was shocked to see Wolf enter the room and lie in a hospital bed for an extended time. After this apparent slumber, Wolf woke up and left the room, which was left empty for hours until a janitor checked on it later.

“Where’s Sofia?” Pierce asked, echoing the thoughts of everyone watching at home.

Considering we’ve never seen Wolf’s new friend interact with anyone else, it seems like Wolf might be coming undone a bit. Wolf has promised not to abandon Sofia the way his father did, but it seems like this might be a mental failsafe to keep him from maintaining his sanity. But for the time being, Sofia seems to be telling Wolf exactly what he wants to hear.
