Among the A-list cast members who are lending their voices to the animated film’s characters is actress Anya Taylor-Joy, who returns to voice Princess Peach. During Taylor-Joy’s March 18 visit to TODAY, she spoke about her character’s evolution from the first film to the sequel.

“I think she’s still deeply empathetic, but she’s also taking care of what she needs in this moment,” Taylor-Joy explained to TODAY co-anchor Craig Melvin of Peach. “She wants to find out where she comes from. She’s on a quest for adventure — and yeah, prioritizing herself a little bit more.”

Melvin described Princess Peach’s character arc in the sequel as one of “self-discovery” — a sentiment that Taylor-Joy agreed with.

“I was so excited when the filmmakers told me that this was the journey that Peach was going to go on, so I think I just approached it with a curiosity, and again, an excitement that I was going to get to learn more about this character that I love so much,” she said.
