Television star and One Chicago icon Carmela Zumbado just stole the show on Season 27 of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Season 27’s “Deep Under” was in no shortage of twists and turns after Detective Joe Velasco (Octavio Pisano) made a triumphant return to the Big Apple. Still undercover with the DEA, Captain Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) was shocked after Velasco called in an anonymous tip about a sex trafficking operation. As it turns out, Velasco was juggling several stressful deceptions, including a romantic relationship with a gang leader’s girlfriend.

Those well-versed in the Dick Wolf cinematic universe may recognize Zumbado from her recurring Season 9 role on Chicago P.D. as Anna Avalos, a former criminal informant for the Intelligence Unit. After working with Sergeant Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) on a high-pressure undercover case, Anna panicked and killed a gang leader. During a state of delirium and devastation, Anna accidentally shot Voight in the arm after being shocked by police sirens, prompting Detective Hailey Upton (Tracy Spirdakos) to shoot Anna twice, killing her.

The tragic chain of events sparked an era of change for a devastated Voight, who took responsibility for Anna coming undone. He vowed never to let an informant get entangled that deeply into an undercover assignment again, and has since lived by the motto: “live and die by your C.I.”

Aside from her gripping storyline on Chicago P.D., Zumbado has also stolen the show in her recurring roles as Delilah Alves in Season 2 of You and Denise Martinez in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Zumbado’s film credits include Identity Thief, Need for Speed, Run Sweetheart Run, If I Tell You, White Elephant, and The Wall of Mexico.

Carmela Zumbado guest-starred as a troubled lover on Law & Order: SVU

Zumbado made her way to the Law & Order universe in SVU Season 27’s “Deep Under” as Eliana Castillo, the girlfriend of a nefarious trafficker, Arturo Aguilar (Rigo Sanchez). After problems surfaced in their relationship and Eliana felt unsafe to leave the increasingly criminal Arturo, Eliana eventually struck up a connection with an undercover detective within the criminal organization, Detective Joe Velasco.

Eliana felt uncomfortable about Arturo escalating from drug trafficking to sex trafficking, but felt trapped under her controlling partner’s thumb. Eliana and Velasco’s friendship soon escalated to a romantic entanglement as Velasco worked on gaining Arturo’s trust. While Velasco kept his status as an undercover cop hidden from Eliana, his feelings for her were genuine, so he grappled with juggling the weight of his undercover assignment and the fiery relationship.

Velasco put his entire undercover status at risk after tipping the SVU off to the sex trafficker’s movements, but that didn’t stop him from meeting up with Eliana at a hotel. Eliana spoke about wanting to leave their life of crime behind, but Velasco explained it was “too hot” to make any major moves. Sure enough, it didn’t take long for Arturo to sniff a rat within his cabal, rounding up Velasco and his confidantes for a perilous interrogation.

Eliana pleaded with Arturo to spare Velasco, arguing that they’d been together at the time of the leak. Arturo let Velasco go, but after realizing Velasco and Eliana were making moves to flee, it all came together. After a brutal altercation, in which Arturo shot both Velasco and Eliana, the bloody scene came to an end only after Sgt. Fin Tutuola (Ice T) arrived at the scene and struck Arturo with his police car.

While there hadn’t been much time for conversation during the tussle, Eliana was furious with Velasco for his secrecy. At the hospital, Velasco was eager to know if Eliana was OK, relieved to discover she would swiftly recover from her injuries. With Eliana’s help, Captain Benson was able to arrange for Eliana to be placed in a witness protection program. Velasco was sad to see the connection come to such a dramatic end, but happy to learn Eliana was escaping the criminal lifestyle once and for all.
