Donnie Wahlberg recently returned for a new season of Boston Blue. Since it was announced that the Blue Bloods spin-off was in development, fans have been wondering if Wahlberg’s onscreen father, Tom Selleck, will make an appearance. Recently, Donnie himself shared what he thinks could make it happen.
The Blue Bloods Spin-Off Boston Blue Premiered Its Second Season In Early October 2026
Viewers were introduced to the fictional Reagan family on the CBS police procedural drama Blue Bloods. This series ran from 2010 to 2024. The long-running series starred Tom Selleck as New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan, with Donnie Wahlberg playing his son, Danny.
In 2025, Danny Reagan returned to screens through this spin-off Boston Blue. As noted by the title, the series involves the former NYPD detective taking a job with the Boston Police Department.
Since then, a few other actors from the parent show have appeared to the spin-off to reprise their characters. This has included Bridget Moynahan, Len Cariou, Will Hochman, and Will Estes.
However, as the show recently returned for a second season, fans have been wondering if Tom Selleck himself will make his return to the franchise. Since the spin-off’s premiere, Wahlberg himself has often expressed his desire to see such a “family” reunion on the show.
Speaking with People, Wahlberg shared that he’s still hoping to get Selleck on the show and has an idea to make it happen. He feels that it will take the “most thoughtful, elegant episode.”
Donnie Wahlberg Felt That He & The Series’ Co-Creators Were Up To The Task
Wahlberg continued, “I learned so much from him, and I have the utmost respect for him. I love him and I miss him. I want him to be on the show at some point.”
Feeling something “special” was needed, the actor continued, “I love him and respect him so much. I know what it will require.” He also shared the hope that co-creators Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis were up to the task to craft such a story.
Wahlberg expressed, “He will do it, but it has to be something really special, because he takes what he does very seriously. And he takes the legacy of the show seriously. He takes Frank Reagan seriously.” He mused that Selleck was too much of a “professional” to make an appearance just as a favor.
While Selleck hasn’t appeared on the show as of yet, Wahlberg shared that he has still been “very supportive” of him and the spin-off. He expressed, “And when the time is right, we will, hopefully, have something exceptional enough for him.”
