Cage’s Malibu property has been threatened by a massive sinkhole that has reportedly swallowed part of the oceanfront home’s driveway.

Photographs published by Page Six on September 8 showed the scale of the damage, with the sinkhole estimated to be 25 feet deep.

The sprawling mansion was built in the 1990s by the late Jose Liberman of Liberman Broadcasting and remained in his family for years before eventually being purchased by “Moonstruck” star Nicolas Cage, according to the publication.

The damage occurred following a day of heavy rainfall across the Los Angeles area, while high surf battered the Southern California coastline after Hurricane Marie formed.

According to a source quoted by the Enquirer, Cage is taking the situation particularly hard because he purchased the property only two years ago.

“Riko’s worried he’s going to drive himself crazy obsessing over this because he hates losing money,” the source said. “He just bought the place two years ago, and this happens. He’s ranting and raving about being cursed.”

The source also claimed that Cage has been complaining about the situation and questioning why the problem has happened to him.

The sinkhole has reportedly already taken the mansion’s driveway, raising questions about the condition of the surrounding property and whether further damage could emerge.

The Enquirer‘s source claimed Cage does not yet know what else may be wrong with the property or how the situation will affect its market value.

“At this point, he doesn’t even know what else is wrong with it and what it’s going to mean as far as the loss of his property value,” the insider said. “The place is potentially in total ruins.”

Cage is reportedly dealing with the crisis from a distance because he spends much of his time in Las Vegas rather than at the Malibu property.

“He spends most of his time in Vegas, so he’s having to deal with this whole headache from a distance, and there’s so much red tape, he says he can’t get anything done,” the source told the publication.

Shibata is reportedly doing her best to help Cage manage his anger and anxiety over the property.

The couple married at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas in February 2021. Cage was 57, and Shibata was 26 at the time. They welcomed their daughter, August Francesca Coppola Cage, in September 2022.

Cage also has two sons from previous relationships: Weston, 35, with former girlfriend Christina Fulton, and Kal-El, 21, with ex-wife Alice Kim.

According to the Enquirer‘s insider, Cage’s mood has become a source of tension at home.

“He’s just in such an angry headspace,” the insider said. “No one wants to be around him.”

However, Shibata is said to be encouraging her husband to put the problem into perspective rather than allow it to consume him.

“She’s doing her best to try and get him to see it’s not worth going crazy over,” the source added. “But he’s so stressed and complaining non-stop, so she’s having no luck.”

While Cage is reportedly struggling with the uncertainty surrounding his $10.5 million Malibu mansion, efforts are underway to protect the property from further damage.

According to The Los Angeles Times, the actor has secured four permits covering repair-related work after the massive sinkhole swallowed his driveway in September.

The permits cover excavation for soil sampling, debris removal, and the placement of sandbags to help protect the oceanfront property from powerful waves and further coastal erosion.

The work is part of a broader effort to stabilize the affected area as Malibu faces continuing coastal hazards.

The damage to Cage’s mansion has extended beyond his driveway. The city of Malibu red-tagged 31 homes along Sea Level Drive after the collapse blocked the neighborhood’s only vehicle access route.

Gas and power lines serving the street were also shut off, and it remains unclear when evacuation orders will be lifted.

The repair process has reportedly faced complications, with the original contractor replaced by a new one in early October.

As reported by the LA Times, the Sea Level Drive Homeowners Association is responsible for overseeing the repairs, leaving the timeline dependent on further work and safety assessments.
