Eric Dane and Rebecca Gayheart’s marriage may have ended years before his death, but their family never fell apart. Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018 after 14 years of marriage. The former couple moved into separate homes and eventually began seeing other people, yet they remained closely connected while raising their daughters, Billie and Georgia.

When Dane was diagnosed with ALS following a frightening nine-month search for answers, the divorce papers were still unsigned. The devastating news changed their priorities, and the legal process was never completed. In his posthumous book, “My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments,” Dane revealed how Gayheart became one of his greatest sources of comfort as his illness progressed.

Dane did not attempt to paint his marriage as perfect. According to an excerpt published by PEOPLE, the actor acknowledged that his demanding career, addiction struggles, and emotional absences placed an enormous strain on Gayheart. “My work hours, my addiction complications, the times I’m away, the times I’m here, but not here, all weigh on Rebecca, smother her, disappoint her, infuriate her,” he wrote. “I get it, I see it, I don’t fight it.”

Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018. However, ending their marriage did not mean walking away from the family they had created. “We leave our marriage, but we don’t leave our family,” Dane explained. “Rebecca and I are not a couple anymore. Well, except sometimes, when we can’t help ourselves. Usually, almost always, we’re not a couple. But we are, always, a family.”

The pair continued co-parenting, vacationing together and remaining involved in one another’s lives despite living separately.

Dane and Gayheart began dating other people by 2020, and they eventually started working through the remaining divorce paperwork. However, their attention shifted when Dane received his ALS diagnosis. The documents were never signed.

In the memoir, Dane described Gayheart as his best friend rather than suggesting the two had officially rekindled their marriage. Their relationship had changed, but their loyalty and affection remained. “We were married for 14 years, grew apart, filed for divorce, but never got around to signing the papers,” he wrote. “We’ve since stayed close, co-parenting, going on vacations as a family, spending time together, and now we talk every day.”

That daily contact became even more important as Dane faced the physical and emotional realities of ALS.

Rebecca Gayheart Was The First Person He Called After His Diagnosis

Dane first noticed something was wrong on January 7, 2024, while eating sushi with his daughters. He suddenly struggled to use chopsticks with his right hand and felt tingling and numbness in his fingers. Initially, he wondered whether he had simply been texting too much. Three weeks later, the problem returned, and he could no longer grip the chopsticks.

After nine months of searching for an explanation, Dane was diagnosed with ALS. He called Gayheart from his car immediately after the appointment. “It’s what we feared,” he remembered telling her.

Dane said he could barely remember what followed, although he recalled Gayheart crying and promising that he would not face the disease alone. “I’m here, we’ll fight this together, I’m not going anywhere,” she told him.

As Dane’s condition progressed, Gayheart remained closely involved in his life. She visited him at different hours of the day and made herself available when he needed to talk, cry, or release his frustration.

“Through it all, Rebecca not only shows up, she remains my best friend,” Dane wrote. “She drops by every day, early in the morning, late at night, sometimes in the middle of the night when she knows I won’t be sleeping.”

Dane and Gayheart didn’t erase the problems that ended their marriage. Instead, they found a way to remain partners in raising their children and confronting the frightening reality of his illness. Following his diagnosis, Dane vowed to fight for his daughters and show them how to face hardship with dignity. Gayheart stood beside him as he attempted to fulfill that promise.

Their relationship no longer fit neatly into the categories of married or divorced. They had separated, lived independently, and dated other people, but they never completed the legal process that would have formally ended their union. More importantly, Dane’s memoir makes clear that Gayheart never stopped being family.

“My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments” is scheduled to be published on November 3, giving readers a deeply personal account of Dane’s career, private struggles, fatherhood, and final battle with ALS.
