Al Roker has gotten to interview a number of people throughout his time on Today. Recently, though, things got a bit awkward for him when he addressed one guest by a certain nickname. After Roker explained his comments, some have since been weighing in on the story.

A Team Of Special Guests Recently Made An Appearance On Today

Roker originally joined Today as a weather anchor back in 1996. At the start of this year, he had celebrated his 30th anniversary with the morning show.

Over the years, Roker’s role on Today has expanded to multiple roles. This includes co-hosting The 3rd Hour of Today. Thanks to this, he has gotten to interview a variety of prominent figures.

During a recent episode of Today, the studio received a visit from various figures from Dateline NBC. Launched in 1992, the series focuses on true crime stories. This was in anticipation of the program’s milestone 35th season on Friday, September 25, 2026.

Keith Morrison, Andrea Canning, Blayne Alexander, Josh Mankiewicz, and Lester Holt all appeared during the episode. At one point, Roker highlighted that Dateline has since become part of the American “pop culture fabric” and “zeitgeist.”

In particular, Roker also shared that he loved Morrison’s online nickname, “Dateline Daddy.” This caused Morrison’s colleagues to break out into laughter during the moment.

This caused Roker to joke that he just “made that up.” However, he immediately backtracked, assuring that it was “actually true” that people were calling Morrison that online.

Roker tried to segue into another question, but, amid all the laughter, he couldn’t resist asking, “Will you be my Dateline Daddy?” When asked how he came up with that, Roker quickly denied that he had, saying that the nickname could be found in his “notes.”

Morrison’s colleagues admitted that there could be something to Roker’s claims. As they pointed out, his cutout standee is apparently the most popular with fans among the cast. When asked what that was all about, the Dateline crew explained that some fans like to have the cutouts at parties.

  • “Keith is a national treasure!”
  • “I literally can’t fall asleep without his voice in the background. Dateline is on all the time at my house!”
  • “This is my Mount Rushmore.”
  • “Cardboard Keith scares almost everyone who walks into my office. 10/10 would purchase again.”
  • “I need a Keith cutout.”
  • “We love you guys so much, Keith is our daddy.”
