Barry Lategan (1935–2024) was a South African-born fashion and portrait photographer best known for discovering and photographing the iconic model Twiggy in the mid-1960s.
After studying briefly at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and discovering photography during his national service, Lategan established himself in London and became a leading figure in fashion photography. He produced numerous covers for British and Italian Vogue, and his refined, elegant style earned him comparisons to a modern Gainsborough.
Over his long career Lategan photographed a wide range of subjects, including Paul and Linda McCartney, Princess Anne, Iman, and Margaret Thatcher, leaving a lasting legacy in the history of fashion and portrait photography. These iconic photos showcase Barry Lategan’s refined eye and lasting influence, capturing the elegance and spirit of an era he helped define.
