When was the last time the Spurs won an NBA Championship?
The last time the San Antonio Spurs won an NBA Championship was back in 2014, when Tim Duncan and company beat LeBron James and the Miami Heat 4-1 in the 2014 NBA Finals.
Yes, it’s been more than a decade since the Spurs were the champs, and there’s definitely been some lean times since. But under former head coach Greg Popovich, who’s widely considered one of the all time greats, the Spurs were somewhat of a dynasty, as the 2014 championship was their fifth in 15 years, having also won chips in 1999, 2003, 2005, and 2007.
The great Tim Duncan was part of every single one of those championship runs. “The Big Fundamental” was only in his second season (having won Rookie of the Year honors in 1998) when he and fellow “Twin Tower,” David “The Admiral” Robinson, led the Spurs to the franchise’s first ever title in 1999. Four years later, Duncan won MVP of both the league and the NBA Finals, as the Spurs defeated Jason Kidd and the New Jersey Nets to win their second title. Robinson, 37 at the time, retired on top following that series.
But Duncan stuck around, and two players in particular cemented themselves as part of the team’s core for the next three championship runs: point guard Tony Parker and shooting guard Manu Ginóbili. Along with Duncan, they became the Spurs’ “Big Three,” and ran Popovich’s “Beautiful Game” offense to near perfection. All told, the Spurs’ “Big Three” became the most winning three-player combo in the history of the NBA.

Who are the players to watch on the 2026 San Antonio Spurs?
The 2026 San Antonio Spurs are built a little differently, but they still have one of the league’s best bigs alongside dynamic guards. In only his second year in the league, 7’4″ sensation Victor Wembanyama is without a doubt the team’s leader, and though he finished behind the Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in MVP voting this year, the 22-year-old certainly looked like the best player on the floor in Game 1.
Surrounding Wemby is a core of talented young players, including 21-year-old All-Star Stephon Castle and 20-year-old rookie Dylan Harper (the son of five-time NBA champion Ron Harper). In fact, when the Spurs’ veteran guard De’Aaron Fox was sidelined from Game 1 with an ankle injury, Harper stepped in and gave the Spurs the youngest starting lineup in a Conference Final game ever, with an average age of 22 years and 346 days.
So yeah, these Spurs are young and talented, and looking to kick off another dynasty in San Antonio. Will that start this year? Tune into NBC and Peacock to find out!
