The Voice: Battle of Champions continues to be a season full of new twists and plenty of surprises. For the first time ever, The Voice brought back Artists from previous seasons to battle one another in head-to-head sing-offs in which they represented not themselves but their former Coaches.
Each current Coach got to choose two Artists from past seasons to battle on their behalf in hopes of winning an extra slot in the Finale. The Voice’s first-ever winner Javier Colon returned to Team Adam alongside Season 9’s champion Jordan Smith. Representing Team Kelly were Season 21 champs Girl Named Tom and Season 17 winner Jake Hoot, while Season 16 winner Maelyn Jarmon and Season 27 Finalist Renzo repped Team Legend.
Overseeing this in-season competition, which took place just after the Knockouts round on April 6, was CeeLo Green, a Coach from the earliest seasons of The Voice and a Mega Mentor in Season 29. He chose the winner of each sing-off, and in the case of a 1-1-1 split score at the end, it would have gone to an audience vote… but that didn’t happen. Instead, one Coach was the clear winner, with their Artists winning both times they stepped onto the stage. And since the Artists chose songs that they’d previously sung on The Voice, it was an extra-special walk down memory lane for all involved. Coach Kelly Clarkson even teared up at the end reflecting on the beauty of being a professional singer.
