Brie Larson was so excited to be voicing a character in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie that she filmed a secret video message about it six months before she was allowed to release it.
It was announced in November 2025 that Larson would be playing Rosalina in the upcoming sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. And in an Instagram post at the time, she revealed that she’d shot a “sneaky announcement” back in May of that year.

Larson’s footage featured her inside Super Nintendo World, one of the five themed sections of Universal Epic Universe in Orlando, Florida, which officially opened to the general public on May 22, 2025 after a VIP launch the day before.
“Hello everyone. So I just want to hold this day in our hearts. Today is May 21,” Larson said in a video she posted to Instagram on November 12, 2025, in which she’s seeing slipping into a Mario-themed warp pipe in Super Nintendo World, away from others. “I’m going in here away from everybody, so no one hears me. But I wanted you to hear from me first that I am going to be — I’m hiding inside a warp pipe right now — I’m going to be in the next Super Mario movie… I play Rosalina.”
Playing Rosalina is a “dream come true” for Brie Larson
The excitement in Larson’s voice was evident as spoke about her role in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
“It is an absolute dream come true. I am sitting here wearing my correct colors, and I didn’t have time to color my hair — sorry I couldn’t go full cosplay this time,” Larson continued, referencing Rosalina’s look in the Super Mario video game franchise. “But it’s a dream come true. I’m so excited for you to see the movie and I’m just holding it in my heart right now, and I can’t wait to share it with you later this year when you’ll find out. But right now, I know, and nobody else does!”

Fans won’t have to wait much longer to see — or hear, rather — Larson in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The film will be released in theaters nationwide on April 1, 2026.
What to know about Rosalina, Brie Larson’s character in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Originally debuting in the 2007 Super Mario Galaxy Wii video game, Rosalina has also been a playable character in Mario Kart, Mario Party, and Super Smash Bros. games.
Rosalina is a princess from outer space — and is the adoptive mother of the Lumas, friendly star-like creatures. (One Luma, Lumalee, appeared in the first Super Mario movie in 2023.)
It remains to be seen how Rosalina will fit into the plot of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, but we can’t wait to see what Larson brings to the character.
