The opening weekend of the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics had it all, from the Opening Ceremony to some genuinely unforgettable highs and lows.

On February 8, time stood still as 41-year-old Lindsey Vonn saw her dreams of another Olympic gold in downhill skiing go up in a cloud of snow as a harrowing crash required the athlete to be airlifted off a mountain for the second time in a little over a week. Meanwhile, U.S. figure skater Ilia Malinin won his first-ever Olympic gold medal for the team competition later on Sunday — and the 21-year-old did it without performing the quadruple axel that he’s popularized in the sport.
