Bari Weiss is the editor-in-chief at CBS News. She has only been in the job for a few months. Her decisions so far have baffled viewers and caused backlash. The staffers in the network’s news division gathered at the studio in New York City for a meeting earlier this week.
According to multiple reports, Bari Weiss admitted a huge mistake. She also finally revealed Gayle King’s fate after months of speculation. Keep reading for all the details on the meeting.
CBS News Boss Admits Huge Mistake
Paramount Global, which owns CBS, merged with Skydance Media in the summer of 2025. Bari Weiss, a former opinion writer with the New York Times and other outlets, took over as editor-in-chief. The network reportedly wanted to move away from the previous liberal-leaning agenda for a more conservative one. The merger resulted in massive layoffs at Paramount, including some at CBS News.

CBS Nightly News anchor John Dickerson resigned in October, months after speaking out against the merger. His co-anchor, Maurice DuBois, followed suit. The network tapped CBS Mornings host Tony Dokoupil to replace them. His tenure got off to a rocky start with technical difficulties and a strange speech where he called previous anchors untrustworthy.
A lot of the backlash for the mishaps has fallen on Bari Weiss. She made the shocking decision to pull an episode of 60 Minutes from the air at the last minute. Inside CECOT was about the Trump administration deporting undocumented immigrants to a notorious prison in El Salvador. The episode eventually aired this month.
In a candid admission to CBS staffers, Bari Weiss admitted it was a “mistake” to pull the episode, according to TV Insider. “Now, am I ever going to hold something again after it has been put out there with promos? I don’t want to make that exact same decision again. No, I do not,” she said.

Bari Weiss Reveals Gayle King’s Fate
Variety reported in October that longtime CBS anchor Gayle King was out after her contract was up in May. CBS denied the report and Gayle King refused to discuss it in the press. A recent report speculated that the two parties came to an agreement to keep Gayle King at the network, at least for now.
Bari Weiss didn’t confirm or deny the agreement. But she did reveal that Gayle King isn’t leaving CBS. While Gayle King’s job might be safe for now, Bari Weiss made her mission clear to CBS staffers.
“We have to start by looking honestly at ourselves. We are not producing a product that enough people want,” she told the employees. That may mean more staffing changes, including Gayle King’s role with the network. Stay tuned for an official announcement about the anchor’s future at CBS News.
