A nanny in Chesterfield is facing charges after allegedly stabbing the elderly grandfather of the child she was watching. Reportedly, she used a screwdriver as a weapon against the man. According to reports, she also attacked the child’s uncle when he intervened to rescue her charge.
A Woman Asked Family Members To Check Up On Her Child, Only For A Grisly Incident To Unfold
Samantha Rae Booth, a 35-year-old nanny, was watching a toddler at a home in Michigan this past weekend. The child’s mother contacted David Ong, the child’s grandfather, to check in on the girl. At the time, the child’s mother was out of town and couldn’t reach Booth.
When Ong didn’t follow up with the mother in a timely manner, she then contacted the child’s uncle to check up on things. When he arrived at the home, he came upon a grisly scene.
Going through the front door, the uncle heard noises from the basement. Downstairs, Ong was reportedly suffering from stab wounds.
According to Fox 11, police claimed that the uncle took the child and tried to escape, leading to Booth allegedly attacking him, following him with a screwdriver as he managed to get outside. The uncle and the child were able to find shelter in a nearby home until police arrived.
Police shared that Ong had died following the incident, with the uncle and the child both endured minor injuries. When police arrived, Booth reportedly dropped the screwdriver, removed her clothes, and ran from the police. Reportedly, she had blood on her hands when police found her.
The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office claimed that the family had known Booth for around two years. She reportedly had no criminal history and had watched the child without prior incident.
The prosecutor’s office shared that Booth appeared to be acting normally prior to the incident. Suspected psychedelic mushrooms and marijuana were later found in her purse, but it is unconfirmed if she was under the influence during the attack.
The Woman Now Faces Charges Including First-Degree Murder & Child Abuse
In a statement, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald shared, “We should all be grateful for the brave actions by her uncle to rescue the two-year-old from this horrific and dangerous situation. David Ong’s murder is a shocking tragedy and the person responsible will be held accountable.”
Royal Oak Police Chief Michael Moore also shared, “We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family as they cope with this tragic and senseless act of violence. No family should ever have to endure such loss, and we are keeping them in our thoughts.”
Reportedly, Booth faces charges of “first-degree murder, second-degree child abuse, assault with a dangerous weapon, and three counts of resisting/obstructing police.” The child abuse charge is allegedly due to the murder taking place in front of a child.
Booth has since been accused of non-lethally assaulting a man with a screwdriver. Authorities had attempted to arraign her with a video inside a cell at the the Royal Oak Police Department. However, Booth did not wish the appear on camera. Her arraignment later took place without her being visible. She was also denied bond.
