Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, 2019’s Game of the Year by FromSoftware, is officially being adapted into an anime. The game is one of the most popular in Steam’s history: It has sold over 10 million units since it debuted in 2019. Set in Japan, it follows Sekiro, a shinobi (or ninja) who is attempting to protect Kuro, the only surviving member of an ancient clan. Now, the story is being adapted into hand-drawn anime, producers confirmed at Gamescom 2025 on August 19.

“We are taking on the monumental task of animating the breathtakingly beautiful Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. In doing so, we are pouring every ounce of our artistic vision and passion for beauty into its production,” director Kenichi Kutsuna said in a statement. “The final product is being crafted to be a truly memorable experience, one that will leave a lasting impression on both dedicated fans of the game and those who are discovering the world of Sekiro for the very first time. Please look forward to it.”

Below, all the information we have about the Sekiro anime adaptation.

The trailer debuted on August 19.

A stunning trailer shows off the fully hand-drawn animation, previewing a swordsman showdown between Sekiro and Genichiro. It’s also our first glimpse into the voice performances. So far, only Sekiro, Genichiro, and Kuro’s voice actors have been confirmed. They’ll be played by Daisuke Namikawa, Kenjiro Tsuda, and Miyuki Satou, respectively, all of whom are reprising their roles from the game.

Produced by Kadokawa, Qzil.la, and ARCH, the adaptation will premiere on Crunchyroll in 2026. “Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a game known for its precision and intensity, and those qualities carry through beautifully in this adaptation,” Crunchyroll CCO Asa Suehira said. “We’re excited to bring Sekiro: No Defeat to fans around the world, and honored to work alongside Kadokawa, Qzil.la, and ARCH to expand this iconic story through the medium of anime.”
