Luckily it will be satiated — Max already picked up The Pitt for a second season back in February, and it’s currently in production. Here’s everything we know thus far about the upcoming season of world’s favorite new medical drama.
Is is set the next day?
No, it is not! “It can’t be the next day, because everything will have just happened, and everyone will be dealing with the PTSD of that,” creator R. Scott Gemmill told Vulture. “It’ll be the most somber 15 hours.”
Okay, so … when is it set?
The Fourth of July! Really, it’s set on the Fourth of July. Gemmill, along with fellow EPs Noah Wyle and John Wells, revealed the new setting to Deadline on April 5. “There’s fireworks,” Gemmill told Vulture. “Somebody doesn’t do so well at a hot-dog-eating contest; somebody’s sunburned. You can see all the cases wandering in.”
What’s gonna happen?
For Dr. Robby, he’s going to get more mental health support (good!). “Part of … season 2 is seeing Dr. Robby acknowledge that he needs help, that he hasn’t gotten the help he needs, and to encourage his coworkers to seek help to take away that stigma,” Gemmill said during a panel, per Deadline. “One of the movements afoot is to make a mental health check sort of mandatory for healthcare workers. And that way, if everyone has to do it, then that takes away the stigma. So doctors who do have a problem or who fall off, whether through addictions, as an example, there are programs that will help them get help and get back to becoming a doctor again.” There is a light at the end of the tunnel for Dr. Robbie, Wyle tells TVLine that he’s “already smiled more in the first four episodes that we’ve shot than I smiled in the first 14 episodes that we shot last year.”
After President Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” was passed, the creative team had “hundreds” of calls with medical professionals on how the cuts to Medicaid would impact hospitals. “The Medicaid changes are going to have a significant impact, and you don’t have to take a political position to discuss what the impact is actually going to be,” Wells told Variety. “When people have less finances from the government to help them with their healthcare, they’re going to get less healthcare, and that means they’re going to end up in the only place where they can get free healthcare, which is the ER,” R. Scott Gemmill added.
Will everyone in the cast be back for season two?
There is one doctor who got the holiday weekend off, Dr. Collins (played by Tracy Ifeachor). Despite speculation on her departure, Wyle says it was purely a story based decision. “I mean, we’ve all been sort of amused by the speculation about what everybody thinks might be a reason,” Wyle told Deadline. “But truthfully, we loved the actress. We enjoyed having her with us very much. She’s gotten really big and we will miss her.”
New faces to the ER include Lawrence Robinson (a patient who turns a soccer injury into a meet cute with a doctor), Charles Baker (an unhoused man), Irene Choi (a third-year medical student), Laëtitia Hollard (nursing school graduate), Lucas Iverson (fourth-year medical student), and Sepideh Moafi (an attending physician).
When is season two of The Pitt coming out?
Season two of The Pitt is officially coming January 2026, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content Casey Bloys confirmed to Vulture on April 10. That’s just one year after the first season’s premiere — an abnormality for the streaming age. “What I love about something like The Pitt is I can get 15 episodes in a year,” Bloys said. “That’s a really great addition to what we’re already doing on the platform. And I’d like to do more shows in this model.”
